The Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia announces new Executive Director

Dr Chris Hatherly has been appointed the new Executive Director of the Academy and will commence in the role on 1 July. Chris joins the Academy of the Social Sciences from the Australian Academy of Science where he has worked since 2015 as Policy Director. Prior to that appointment, he worked in Government and not-for-profit roles, including as National Research Manager at Alzheimer’s Australia. Chris holds a PhD in Psychology from ANU.

Professor Jane Hall, President of the Academy, said “Chris brings a deep appreciation of the social sciences and a clear view of the contribution that can be made through the learned academies. My colleagues and I welcome him to the Academy of the Social Sciences and look forward to working with him to strengthen the Academy and enhance its contribution to meeting Australia’s social challenges.”

Professor Hall also expressed the deep appreciation to Liz West who, as Acting Executive Director, has led the national office team since the untimely death of the previous Executive Director, Dr John Beaton.
