Professor Charmine Härtel is an acknowledged preeminent scholar-practitioner in her fields of Human Resource Management, Organisational Development, Organisational Behaviour, and Occupational Health Psychology. The scholarly impact of her work is demonstrated by over 3600 citations in Google Scholar since 2012 (Hirsch h-index =36), over 1400 citations in Scopus (h = 14), receipt of 13 best paper awards and inclusion of her 2002 piece in the top 50 most cited articles of the decade for Leadership Quarterly. She is an elected member of the Society for Organisational Behaviour in Australia, recipient of the Australian Psychological Society’s prestigious Elton Mayo Award for scholarly excellence, Fellowship of the (US) Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP), Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Management (ANZAM), and recipient of some AUD$3million in Australian Research Council (ARC) grants and $1 million in commissioned research. She is past President of ANZAM, Professional Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management (AIM) and Australian Human Resources Institute (AHRI), Founder and Chair of the Senior HRM Executives Roundtable, Co-Founder of the Key Centre for Human Factors and Applied Cognitive Psychology, and Past Division Chair and Executive Team Member of the Gender and Diversity in Organizations Division of the U.S. Academy of Management (comprising 770 U.S. members & 401 non-US members). She is regularly offered Honorary Research Professor appointments e.g., The ARI Distinguished Scholar Grant for Research in Residence on Occupational Health Psychology at Sapienza University of Rome, which is ranked first among Southern European universities and both the Toft and Jenz Hamrin Foundation Distinguished Scholar Grants for Research in Residence on Family Business & Entrepreneurship at Jönköping International Business School, the leading centre in Europe for research on family business. She frequently is invited as a keynote at leading events (e.g., APAC 2017 Vietnam diversity and inclusion forum).
She is a co-founder of the study of emotions in organizations, co-founder and co-organizer of the International Conference on Emotions and Organizational Life, and Series Co-Editor of Research on Emotion in Organizations. She is primary author of a wholly original Australian HRM textbook, shortlisted across all university disciplines for the Australian Awards for Educational Publishing; the book emphasizes HRM as a process and viewing the employment relationship from a social inclusion and wellbeing perspective.
Professor Härtel’s internationally recognized research program is building holistic theory and evidence-based practice on ways to link organisational practices and socio-economic needs for the betterment of the health and wellbeing of individuals, communities, and the natural environment. For example, she is currently working with an international research team on improving the employment opportunities and inclusion of autistic adults, is co-developing coaching methodologies to improve physiological and psychological wellbeing of medical students and doctors, and leading a research team investigating ways team leaders can improve the support of emergency services paid and volunteer staff in the face of stressful events. The high social impact of her translational research is evidenced by numerous international awards, including 5 awards for innovation in organisational practice.
