Deborah Lupton has an international reputation in the sociology of health and illness, the sociology of risk, and digital sociology. In all three areas, she has published book-length analyses and many articles and chapters. She also published extensively in the sociology of pregnancy, childhood and parenting, the emotions and food (again, with books on each topics). In addition to contributing to social theoretical analyses, she has conducted many empirical research studies, mostly using qualitative methods such as interviews, focus groups and ethnography, and more recently, design research and practice-based methods.

Deborah Lupton been in the forefront of researching emergent social phenomena, with recent examples including empirical studies of apps for self-diagnosis, pregnancy and health; cyclists who use self-tracking devices; public understandings of digital data; women’s use of digital health technologies; health and physical education teachers’ use of digital technologies in the classroom; and consumer attitudes to 3D food printing. She has authored/co-authored 16 books, and edited five others. Four of her books have been translated (into Italian, Japanese, Korean, Spanish and Turkish). Three books have been revised for second or third editions.
