Profile

Kate Darian-Smith is Executive Dean and Pro Vice-Chancellor, College of Arts, Law and Education, at the University of Tasmania.  She previously was at the University of Melbourne, where she held  joint appointments as Professor of Australian Studies and History, School of Historical and Philosophical Studies and Professor of Cultural Heritage, Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning. She has expertise and has published widely in Australian and imperial history and Australian Studies, including in memory studies, material culture and heritage, media history, the history of childhood, and war and society. She is the co-editor of  Australian Historical Studies;  section editor for History Compass; and serves on  several other editorial boards; and the recipient of awards in recognition of her reserach thesis supervision and mentoring from the Australian Learning and Teaching Council and the University of Melbourne.

Kate has long-term involvement in the developmen Australian Studies in Britain, Europe and Asia. She has served two terms on the Board of the Australia-Japan Foundation (2010-16), and is currently on the Academic Advisory Committee, Foundation for Australian Studies in China (FASIC).  She current Vice-President and former President (2002-7) of the International Australian Studies Association (InASA); and on the Executive of the Australasian Consortia of Humanities Research Centres (ACHRC). Kate has served two terms on the Council of the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House (2009-16); is the Chair of the Art and Heritage Collections Advisory Committee at the City of Melbourne; and a Research Fellow at Museum Victoria.   She has been a member of the  Humanities and Creative Arts  Evaluation Committee of the ARC Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) Initiative (2010), from 2015 is a member of the ARC’s College of Experts.
