Jock McCulloch’s main interests were in contemporary African history and the politics of health.  He conducted field work in Algeria, Kenya, Swaziland, Lesotho, Malawi, Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe, and was for a period a legislative research specialist in foreign affairs for the Australian Parliament.  He is the author of several books, including Black Soul White Artifact, Cambridge University Press 1984/2002.   His books include Black Peril White Virtue: Sexual Crime in Colonial Zimbabwe (2000), Asbestos Blues: Mining Asbestos in South Africa (2002), with Geoffrey Tweedale Defending the Indefensible: The Global Asbestos Industry and Its Fight for Survival (2008)  and South Africa’s Gold Mines and the Politics of Silicosis (2012)
