Profile

Professor Patricia Grimshaw is Max Crawford Professor of History at the University of Melbourne. Her interests focus on comparative studies of former settler colonies and the territories and new states of the U.S. West in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, looking at indigenous/settler relations, and at issues of gender, race and citizenship. Professor Grimshaw’s recent research includes:

  • suffrage activism in new settler societies
  • nineteenth century missions to Aborigines
  • the civil status of indigenous peoples in democratising colonies.
