ASSA's Outreach Program engages individuals, groups and institutions not normally associated with the Academy and which might benefit from contributions of social scientists. The Academy developed and continues in partnerships to support the ASSA Indigenous Summer School and Mentoring Program. ASSA supports public lectures and responds to invitations from foreign embassies, community groups and industry.
In 2002, with the generous assistance of the Government, ASSA embarked on a program to assist Indigenous postgraduate students and their supervisors in their joint aspirations to ensure the timely progress to completion of Masters, PhD, and other professional qualifications. The Summer School involves a week of residential, intensive activity. This initiative attracted support from private foundations and individuals and has completed three very successful summer schools with ASSA Fellows generously volunteering their services. This flagship outreach program is one that ASSA is determined to continue, pending funding.
ASSA encourages Fellows resident in each state to engage with each other in order to share views, host guest speakers, or even meet socially in order to increase regional connections and promote the social sciences in their capital city and beyond. Each State Branch has a local convenor who acts as the network hub for the Branch.
The ASSA state based Fellows initiative will fund a Fellow or Fellows from an Academy branch to convene dialogue-orientated events addressing a state based issue. This initiative aims to facilitate includes, but are not limited to, workshops, public lectures, debates and roundtables that address a state based issue or an issue of local significance. These events may be held on a collaborative basis by local Fellows of the Academy with a collaborating organisation and additional financial support from an external source can be raised for the event by applicants.
